WP sunday 13/03

A long weekend came and I was basically on the sidelines making up browny points for taking the whole previous weekend at Apollo Bay. Deciding that as a fisherman you're never going to get into the positives on browny points I went fishing anyway.

Dad and I launched the boat at about 4.30 and headed out in front of Coronet Bay. Almost immediately Dad was into the fish, boating a 3 foot gummy and 35cm pinkie in quick succession. I was still fishless, and couldn't resist all of the gars just cruising around the back of the boat so I grabbed some bass yabbies that we had for whiting fishing and put them on unweighted. No gars but every cast was a yakka, and they were the biggest I've ever seen them (About 25-30cm). They became bait and I finally had a decent hookup on a yakka cutlet, which resulted in a 1.11m gummy shark, seen below:

Dad got in on the act with the yakkas and even managed a dirty great big pike, then caught a smaller yakka and threw it on as a livie. About 10 mins later it started to get very agitated and a minute or so after that it took off. It wasn't the monster gummy or jewie we had hoped but a nice 80cm gummy rounded off the early session nicely and we got ready to head off to Reef Island to try to catch some whiting. Just to prove it was his morning as he went to pull in his other rod a 50cm flathead jumped on!

For the first time in months at Reef Island we couldn't find them, although I managed a small pinkie, and Dad managed the world's smallest banjo shark, caught on a bass yabbie!

By this stage the kids were up so we went in to the Coronet Bay foreshore to pick up the nephews, and it was Zach's birthday so he was keen for a good fish. We headed back near Pelican Island and it was a bit slow until one of my rods (Baited with a slab of yakka) took off. I set the hooks and handed the rod to Zach, whilst still keeping a firm grip of both him and the rod! It arced across the back of the boat, taking both of Dad's lines out (I later told him that the only thing better than catching a good fish is to take Pop out of the game at the same time!) so I grabbed the rod and manuevered it around where he resumed the battle. A few minutes later up came a nice elephant fish, and as you can see by the pic he wasn't too keen to go near it!

We headed back in, happy with the session and glad to get a few gummies when often at this time of year you can't get a bait past the elephants to get to the decent fish. Looking forward to the next trip!

The Winning Bream

Dad sent me a pic of the winning bream. As told last post, I did manage to take my camera with us out to the fishing spot but forgot to take the battery, which was sitting happily at home on the charger so I had to wait to get this sent to me.

Measured 36cm and great fun targeting them from the yak!
